Earthquake: 01/19/10

It is so hard to believe it is one week since the world stopped for Haiti. One week, filled with untold pain and suffering. Running 3 teams in the OR , 2 beds in one room, case after case almost never ending. The immensity is overwhelming as those in so much pain, so much loss keep coming. Patients line the walkways at the entrance waiting, waiting, waiting for someone to remove this horror, somehow. Coming back from checking a man whose face and leg had been shattered, I saw a beautuful young girl holding a picture of her sister–so young, so full of life in the image. Missing. Gone. Lost perhaps forever to those who love her so. She was desperately walking to each make shift hospital, searching. I could not hold back my tears, hot on my face.

Yet in the agony and despair a child was born here this day – a sign of hope and light in the immense darkness of this time.

We must remember the light, as the darkness can too easily consume us. Somehow, someway, these wonderful people must be helped.
