Earthquake: 01/20/10

Update from Dr. Campbell in Port-Au-Prince:

Standing in the hospital just before dawn the sensation of swaying came from no where as the walls buckled with the earthquake. Patients began screaming, praying, sobbing as they ran from the building with memories of the week before fresh. Chaos. Broken bodies carried on backs, wheelchairs, pieces of wood. As I held a young man’s leg I could feel the bones moving in my hands, his cries loud in my ears.

Update from Dr. Campbell in Port-Au-Prince:

Broken bodies continue to pour in as people learn we are here……broken bodies, broken lives fill the halls and wings, never stopping. Desperately all those here try to stop the infection that covers every open fracture, every rotting wound. The smell of gangrene fills me this night as I think of the faces of those I have seen this day.

Driving through the crumbling city, buildings and streets destroyed. People everywhere walking with faces that speak of a horror I cannot imagine-exhausted, nothing left. Yet on the corner a man sold sugarcane, and a few were beginning to walk around in the safety of daylight hours…we are at Kings Hospital in PAP–Jeanne,Dr. David

VPI has sent Dr. Sylvia Campbell and Jeannie Gres (CNRA) to Haiti following the earthquake where they are currently serving by performing surgeries at the King’s Hospital north of Port-Au-Prince. We appreciate your prayers for them. We anticipate their return in approximately ten days.
